Why You Should Learn How To Play The Guitar Online When I started playing guitar, social media wasn’t huge. There weren’t very many people online playing, sharing videos, or taking lessons online. Drop D tuning is almost a standard in some genres. But what is it, and how do I do it? Well, if that’s the question you are asking yourself then you came to the right place. First, check out that PDF in the upper right corner of this page. I skimmed through it and the gentlmen that put that together did a pretty damn good job. I’m not an expert on drop tuning, hell…. I suck at standard tune…. but I have read through the PDF and watched the video below enough to bet a buck that it might be some of the best information on the subject around. That’s kinda what I’m doing here, trying to give a place to the absolute beginner guitarist where he or she can come, troll the site and snag some solid knowledge. I’ll admit, I’m trying to make a couple of bucks of this blog site…. but nothing is for sale, so look around and learn some shit.
When I was younger I dropped a lot of stuff, my mom’s fine china, acid, neighborhood bullies, kids off at the pool, bombs…. hell, you name it…. if it was dropable then there is a good chance I did it. But here I am all these years later and I have never drop tuned a guitar to D. WTF?
Tonight I make history, tonight I drop a D tune on my 6 string. To celebrate this accomplishment I will also drop a 6 pack of brews down my neck piece. I’ll be jamming in no time, why? Because I’ll be feeling like a million bucks… and the PDF and youtube video on this page provide enough information for me to hang out on it, read, jam, drink, and think.
Drop D Tuning is not dead, it’s alive and rock’n…. it’s here to stay, so you might as well learn how it’s done. Now the guy that wrote the attached PDf has done a pretty good job explaining the concept behind it and bringing it to life. Drop that D bomb on your guitar, quit pissy moping around and get’er done son!
Ok, so I realize this wasn’t some great piece on drop D guitar tuning, but it was fun. I dropped the D bomb on my 6 string minutes ago and have been stroking her strings for a few minutes now. It feels good, sounds good…. haven’t tasted it yet but I am guessing that it might…. I’ve spilt enough beer on it over the years that it can’t taste bad.
Ok, I’m going to try and make sure that you reading my blog hasn’t been a total waste of your time. So here it is… a few tips and tricks on tuning a drop D guitar.
Drop D tuning is one of the simplest guitar tunings out there, when your guitar is in Drop D you can easily form a power chord by barring your finger across the fattest 3 strings of any fret. This can be shifted around rather quickly up and down the fretboard always forming a power chord.
The only difference in Drop D from Standard is the fattest string is tuned down a whole tone to a D rather than an E. Learn from these instructions and you’ll always be able to switch into Drop D on the fly.
Step 1: Get into Standard Tuning
You’ll want to start in Standard Tuning aka; E-A-D-g-b-e. Once your there you’ll only have to modify one string.
Step 2: The 6th String – D
Since you’re already in Standard Tuning all you have to do is pluck the D string (4th string down) and the low E string (the fattest string) together and then loosen the tuning peg so it lowers the pitch of that string from an E to a D. Fiddle with the tuning peg until the pitches are the same.
That’s all there is to it!
Bar the bottom 3 strings with your index finger and you can now play an instant power chord.
